BOAT REGISTRATION SUMMARY

The information presented here is subject to change and should be confirmed with the respective state agency.

State numbering. The boat registration number prefix is "NB".
Title certificates. Motorboats built after 11/1/72 must titled.
Registration certificates.

All vessels powered by any mechanical device capable of propelling the vessel must be registered. Registration is not required for Coast Guard documented vessels. Registration certificates are issued on a three year basis.

Sales & use tax. Use taxes must be paid prior to registration
Loan perfection. Non-documented boats - Lender is recorded on the state title.
Documented boats - Lender is secured by a preferred vessel mortgage.
Registration agency. Game and Parks Commission maintains boat records. Registration applications are made at the county treasurer's office. Title applications are made at the county clerk's office.
Boat record search. Contact the Game and Parks commission to verify documents in hand. Use a public record provider for printed reports.
Ownership designations. "AND" and "With Right of Survivorship" designations are recognized for joint ownership.
Electronic titles. Not applicable.
Bonded titles. Bonded titles are available for boats.
Hull number inspection. None required.
Outboard motors. No titling or registration required.
Boat trailers. Registration and titling required if gross weight is over 9,000 lbs.
Notary public. Four year term. $15,000 bonding. Inked stamp seal required.
Visitation period. 60 days.
