State numbering.
The
registration number prefix for New Jersey is "NJ".
Title certificate.
All
registered vessels over 12' must be titled.
Registration certificate.
Registration
is required on all power and sail boats over 12' in length.
Motorized boats under 12' such as jet skis must also be
registered. Registration is required for Coast Guard documented
vessels.
Sales & use tax.
Sales tax is
required on boat transactions.
Loan perfection.
Loans are
perfected with the Motor Vehicle Commission for non-documented
vessels. A preferred vessel mortgage is necessary for Coast
Guard documented vessels.
Registration agency.
Motor Vehicle
Commission. Registrations can be implemented by mail, but a
personal appearance is required for first time titles and
transfers.
Boat record search.
A written
application must be submitted to the Motor Vehicle Commission.
Boat records are maintained for 8 years.
Ownership designations.
No specific
joint ownership designations other than listing all owners by
name.
Residency requirements.
Residency is
not required if the boat is located in New Jersey.
Abandoned boats.
New Jersey
has procedures for transferring abandoned boats.
Hull number inspection.
Required if
there is a discrepancy.
Outboard motors.
Registration
and titling are not required.
Notary public.
A notary seal
is not required in this state. All attorneys in this state can
act as notaries.
Visitation period.
180 days.
