State numbering.
The boat
registration number prefix for South Dakota is "SD".
Title certificate.
All
registered boats must be titled, except for those which are
documented with the Coast Guard.
Registration certificate.
Registration
is required on all boats over 12' and all motor boats regardless
of length. Coast Guard documented vessels are also subject to
registration. Registrations are renewed optionally from 1 to 3
years.
Sales &
use tax.
Sales and
excise taxes are levied on boat transactions.
Loan perfection.
Security
interests are perfected on the title records for non-documented
boats.

Vehicles Division
Boat record search.
The Motor
Vehicles Division will confirm hull numbers and certificates in
hand. Detailed information must be obtained from a public boat
record provider.
Ownership designations.
All parties
must release title with the "AND" designation. Any party may
release with an "OR" designation. The surviving party may
release with the "WROS" (with right of survivorship)
designation.
Residency requirements.
Title
certificates are available to non-residents if the boat is
located within the state.
Bonded
titling or registration.
Bonded titles are available.
Hull number inspection.
Required if there is a discrepancy.
Outboard motors.
Not subject
to titling and registration.
Notary
public.
Notaries
serve a six year term and must post a $5,000 bond. Embossed or
inked seal must be affixed to all notarized documents.
Visitation period.
60 days.
