Boat titles, registration certificates, and vessel documentation certificates serve as important regulatory records for establishing vessel identity, ownership, registration status, and operating authority. Often referred to in nautical terms as boat's or ship's papers, some must be carried aboard while others are best kept in a secure location where they will not be lost, damaged, or compromised.

These papers provide the foundation for most boat transactions, including purchase agreements, loan security arrangements, mortgages, insurance applications, and other actions associated with vessel ownership and operation. They are also necessary during boarding inspections, where inaccurate, missing, or conflicting information can result in delays, citations, fines, or other enforcement action.

It goes without saying that the importance of accurate papers as they correspond precisely with the boat itself cannot be overstated.

About the Analysis Report

Our Boat Identification Analysis Report is the first of its kind to address these highly critical issues in a comprehensive manner. The report entails an analysis of the provided input criteria for regulatory viability and cross checks of all elements for compatibility with each other. Any deficiencies or anomalies are spelled out in detail with instructions on how to rectify the problem. It also provides tips on how to conduct physical inspections and where to conduct additional title, registration or documentation searches. All you need to do is gather up the boat's papers, enter the respective criteria, click the submit button, wait a couple of minutes, and you can  read, print, copy, or download the entire report.  And best of all, it's completely free of charge with no obligation whatsoever.

Report Criteria

The analysis report is based on six different criteria as derived from the boat's papers, including state titles, registration certificates, and certificates of documentation as applicable. Exactly what these are and how they come into play is shown as follows.
Length: The boat's length is determined from a state title, registration certificate or the length field on a Certificate of documentation. Keep in mind that documentation entails the measured length whereas a state title or registration certificate will show the model length which may differ somewhat. This will help determine whether a boat is qualified for documentation or not. The length is a required field and must be entered in decimal format only.
Make:  The boat's make criteria is determined from the make/manufacturer field as shown on a state title or registration certificate. These should not be confused with various model names as assigned by a manufacturer. A USCG certificate of documentation may show a physical place built if provided by an applicant, but does not reveal the manufacturer's name. In any event, the make is required and will be matched to the MIC portion of the hull number.
Year: The boat's year is determined from the year field on a state title, state registration certificate or year completed field on a certificate of documentation. Keep in mind that these may vary by a year or two depending on the actual build year or model year. This will be matched against the year indicator on the hull identification number. Enter the year as four digits. This is a required field.
Official Number:  The official USCG vessel documentation number is shown on the certificate of documentation when applicable. This will be analyzed for proper format and evaluated against the other report criteria. Enter the official number in numeric format only or leave blank if not applicable.
Hull Identification  Number:  The manufacturer hull identification number is the most important unique boat identifier. It is displayed on a boat title, registration and certificate of documentation if applicable. This is coded to provide several details about the boat, a breakdown of which is shown on the report. These elements are compared against all other criteria for viability.
State Registration Number:  A registration number is shown on both state title and registration certificates when applicable. It is not shown on a certificate of documentation. Leave this field blank when the boat is not currently registered. When present, it will be analyzed for proper format and evaluated against other criteria.

Recommendations and Referrals

This report is intended for preliminary boat identification factors only and does not constitute an actual boat title or history search. Such resources can instead be found in our BoatScope database service and throughout the pages of our website. The analysis will, however, point out any anomalies or deficiencies and make recommendations regarding the need for additional investigation.

Conclusion

The Boat Identification Analysis Report is subject to errors, omissions, misinformation or changes without notice. All aspects of this report should be further investigated and researched to ensure accuracy. MarineTitle.com accepts no responsibility or liability whatsoever from usage of this report.
