Registry Overview

The Australian national vessel registry was established in 1982 according to the Shipping Registration Act 1981. The registration process is administered by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Registration Office

Federal yacht registration for the Commonwealth of Australia is administered through the Shipping Registration Office in Braddon ACT which is a suburb of Canberra. Contact information can be found by visiting their website.

Registration Requirements

As a general rule, Australian yacht registry is only available to vessels which are owned by citizens of Australia. Although required for offshore usage, the registry is optional when used domestically for recreational purposes. Detailed vessel and ownership requirements for national registration can be found by visiting the AMSA website.

Recording Methods

Security interests, liens, and mortgages are no longer recorded on the underlying transcript of registry. As with any other personal property, these are now recorded in the national Personal Property Security Register (PPSR). This may not however show all claims against the vessel such as mechanic's liens, possessory liens, tax liens, and other statutory liens. A maritime attorney of the appropriate jurisdiction may be helpful in dealing with such issues.

Registration Search

The Australian Maritime Authority maintains an online database of vessels which is available online by visiting the List of Registered Vessels. However, such information is limited and can only be searched by the vessel's name or official number. Complete vessel details, ownership information, and a history of all recordings can be found by obtaining a Vessel Title Extract. Security interest data, mortgages, and liens are however no longer included as these are now recorded in the national Personal Property Security Register.
