Registry Overview

The Cook Islands is a self-governing island country in the South Pacific Ocean which is associated with New Zealand. Official languages include English, Cook Islands Māori, and Pukapukan. The Cook Islands operates an open register for ships and yachts via a network of Deputy Registrars around the world. Maritime Cook Islands performs all Flag State duties for the Cook Islands government through an agreement with the Ministry of Transport.

Registration Offices

The Maritime Cook Island's main office for the Registrar of Ships, is located in Avarua, Rarotonga. The MCI also serves a reliable worldwide network of Deputy Registrars.

Registration Requirements

Yachts of any type and size will qualify for the Cook Islands registry. Owners can qualify through membership of the Cook Islands Ship Owners Association (CISOA) or Cook Islands Yacht Squadron (CIYS) or by establishing a Cook Islands International Company or by registering an existing Foreign Company on the Cook Islands International Companies Register.

Recording Methods

A yacht mortgage covering the vessel, its equipment, and earnings can be recorded against duly registered yachts of the Cook Islands. Mortgages are discharged by filing a memorandum of discharge form.

Registration Search

Transcripts of registry showing ownership, liens, mortgages, and vessel particulars can be obtained from the Cook Islands registrar's office. They are also available through the services of a local maritime attorney or yacht registry service.
