Registry Overview

Monaco is one of the primary European jurisdictions for yacht flag registration. The process is quite simple once you have the invoice to prove ownership, examples of this would be photos from all sides of the vessel and the necessarily certificates that accompany the vessel. An application must then be submitted to the Department of Maritime Affairs in Monaco. Monaco, officially known as the Principality of Monaco, is a sovereign city-state and microstate on the French Riviera a few kilometers west of the Italian region of Liguria, in Western Europe. The official language is French, although Monegasque, Italian and English are spoken.

Registration Office

The Department of Maritime Affairs yacht registry office is headquartered in Monaco.

Registration Requirements

The Monaco yacht registry system will accommodate all types of vessels subject to certain qualifications. Vessels over 8 meters in length that do not hold an EC type approval certificate must undergo a pre-commissioning inspection before being registered under the Monegasque flag. All vessels under the Monegasque flag must show their name and the word "MONACO" on the stern, and, for vessels over 24 meters, the name of the vessel must appear on each side of the bow. Furthermore, for vessels over 7.5 meters purchased within the E.U, it will be necessary to present a confirmation that the boat complies with all tax obligations. Monaco nationals and residents can apply to register a yacht under the Monegasque flag. Those who wish to appoint a captain and/or a crew must notify the Department of Maritime Affairs.

Recording Methods

The Monaco yacht registry system has provisions for the recording and discharge of vessel mortgages.

Registration Search

A transcript of Monaco yacht registry showing ownership, mortgages, and vessel particulars is available from the registrar's office or through a private registry servicing company.
