Registry Overview

Vanuatu has a national registration system for ships and yachts. This is administered under contract through Vanuatu Maritime Services Limited and its international network of registry offices. Vessels flying the Vanuatu flag receive friendly treatment in ports throughout the world. Vanuatu, officially the Republic of Vanuatu, is an island country located in the South Pacific Ocean. The official languages of Vanuatu are Bislama, English and French.

Registration Office

The registry is operated by Vanuatu Maritime Services Limited with the head office in Port Vila, Vanuatu, and the day-to-day operations office located in New York. This is a privately held Vanuatu company operating under contract with the Vanuatu government as the maritime administrator. It operates the central registry office and handles all the details of vessel registration, mortgage recordation, seafarer documentation and all matters relating to safety and proper vessel inspection.

Registration Requirements

A vessel can be registered under the Vanuatu flag if it is in a seaworthy condition at the time of registration. If the vessel is a pleasure yacht it must be over 50 net registered tons and a declaration must be submitted that it will be used solely for pleasure purposes. The Vanuatu international ship registry is open to owners of any nationality.

Recording Methods

Vanuatu has provisions for recording mortgages against vessels which are enrolled in the registry. These are administered by Vanuatu Maritime Services Limited.

Registration Search

Transcripts of registry for Vanuatu registered vessels showing ownership, mortgages, and vessel particulars are available from the registrar's office or through a private service provider.
