State numbering.
The
registration number prefix for this state is "UT".
Title certificate.
All vessels
manufactured since 1985 and with a motor of 25 hp or greater
will be titled. Titles are not issued for Coast Guard documented
vessels.
Registration certificate.
Required on
all boats powered by a motor or sail. Registration is also
required for Coast Guard documented vessels. The registration
period is yearly.
Sales &
use tax.
Sales tax is
levied on boat transfers.
Loan perfection.
Recorded on
the title records for non-documented vessels. A preferred vessel
mortgage is necessary for Coast Guard documented vessels.
Registration agency.
Utah Division
of Motor Vehicles.
Boat record search.
The Division
of Motor Vehicles will confirm documents in hand only.
Ownership designations.
Both
signatures are required to release a title with the 'AND'
designation. Only one signature is required for the "OR",
"AND/OR" designation.
Hull number inspection.
Inspection is
required on all boats registering in this state for the first
time.
Reporting requirements.
Transfers and
abandonments must be reported within 15 days.
Outboard motors.
Title
certificates are issued for outboard motors 1985 or newer with
25 or more horsepower. Registration certificates are not issued.
Boat trailers.
Titling and
registration are required unless the trailer is a single axle
less than 750 lbs unladen.
Notary
public.
$5,000 notary
bonding is required. Notaries must seal with an inked stamp.
Dealer & broker licensing.
Boat dealers
and brokers are licensed by this state. No bonding is required.
Visitation period.
Registration
is required for out of state visitors after 14 days.
