BOAT REGISTRATION SUMMARY

The information presented here is subject to change and should be confirmed with the respective state agency.

State numbering. The boat registration number prefix for Louisiana is "LA".
Title certificate. Boat titles are not issued. This is a registration only state.
Registration certificate. All boats must be registered except sail boats less than 13' in length and sailboards. Coast Guard documented boats are exempt from registration.
Sales & use tax. Sales tax is levied on all boat transactions.
Loan perfection. Boat security interests are perfected with a UCC financing statement on non-documented boats. A preferred vessel mortgage is required if the boat is Coast Guard documented.
Registration agency. Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Boat record search. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will verify hull numbers and certificates in hand. Detailed information must be obtained from a public record vendor.
Ownership designations. Joint ownerships are not specified.
Residency requirements. Non-residents may obtain titles if the boat is located within the state.
Electronic titles. Not applicable.
Hull number inspection. Required if there is a discrepancy.
Abandoned boats. Found or abandoned boats are not eligible for registration.
Reporting requirements. Ownership transfers, abandonments, and destructions must be reported to the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries within 15 days. Stolen boats must be reported within 5 days.
Outboard motors. Titles and registrations are not issued for outboard motors.
Notary public. Notary commissions are for life, $10,000 bonding is required, usage of notary seals is optional.
Visitation period. 90 days.
